FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique with thousands of years of use that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body. These specific points are potent communication hubs on the biological circuit board (energy system) of the human body. Acupuncture is based on the concept that blockages or imbalances in the energy or “Qi” (pronounced chee) of the body’s circuit board, can cause health issues. Acupuncture presses the “reset” button on these points, aiming to restore this balance and promote natural healing and wellness.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?
Acupuncture is used to treat various conditions, including chronic pain (like back pain, neck pain, and headaches), arthritis, digestive disorders, stress, anxiety, insomnia, and some reproductive issues. It’s also often used for general wellness and stress management.
Is Acupuncture Painful?
Most people find acupuncture relatively painless. The needles used are very thin, and their insertion is generally not like getting an injection or blood drawn. Some people may feel a slight prick, tingling, warmth, or heaviness at the acupuncture points.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments varies depending on the individual and their condition. Acute issues may require only a couple of sessions, while chronic conditions might need more treatment. You are never locked into a course of treatment and can choose your appointments as you go. The acupuncturist will assess and explain further at your appointment.
Are There Any Side Effects of Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a Licensed Acupuncturist who goes through many formal years of acupuncture training – this is a distinct title given specifically after board certification by the state’s acupuncture licensing board (in example, other providers using acupuncture or dry needling are often not licensed specifically by the acupuncture licensing board.) Our Licensed Acupuncturist, Kristin, is licensed by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board. Minor side effects of acupuncture can include soreness, minor bleeding or bruising at the needle sites. Serious side effects are rare.
How Should I Prepare for an Acupuncture Session?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and ensure you have eaten a light meal a few hours before your session. Avoid alcohol and caffeine before your treatment. Be prepared to discuss your medical history and current health concerns with the acupuncturist.
What Should I Expect During My First Visit?
The first visit usually includes a detailed health history assessment. The Licensed Acupuncturist will ask about your symptoms, behaviors, and lifestyle. The actual treatment involves placing needles and may include other complementary therapies. The session can last from 60 to 90 minutes depending on the appointment you have chosen.
Is Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance provider and plan. Some insurance policies cover acupuncture, while others do not. It’s best to check with your insurance provider for details about coverage for acupuncture services. While we do not bill insurance directly, we can provide you with a Superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Payment is taken at the time of the appointment. We have very competitive pricing for the area to make acupuncture as affordable as possible. Please see our pricing information here.

How Are Acupuncturists Trained and Licensed?
Licensed Acupuncturists are required to complete extensive education, including a master’s degree in acupuncture and Chinese medicine from an accredited institution. This education includes years of supervised clinic shifts, frequent testing, personal mentoring, and exit exams. After graduation comes national board exams, obtaining a license from the state where they practice, and dozens of hours of Chinese medicine and acupuncture-focused continuing education training each year. Our Licensed Acupuncturist, Kristin, is licensed to practice acupuncture in North Carolina. See more about her training here.
Can Acupuncture Be Combined with Other Treatments?
Yes, acupuncture can be used in conjunction with other medical treatments. It’s often integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that may include conventional medicine, physical therapy, and massage. Always inform all your healthcare providers about all the different types of treatments you are using.
